Green Tourism
Accommodation Tobermory
has endeavoured for some years now to follow a 'Green' policy.
This is not an easy path to take, living on an island, but one that
we believe in.
Caring for the natural environment and
landscape is important to us at Sealladh Carrachan. We are
committed to conserving our island’s natural resources and are
hoping to provide a greener holiday environment. We are
implementing various ways to help make the world a greener place.
Through the membership of the Green
Tourism Business Scheme we have committed to:
-
Follow good environmental practice in all
business activities
-
Ensure that the business meets the minimum
requirements set by environmental law and fulfils its legal Duty
of Care requirements for waste disposal.
-
Ensure that it is minimising the harmful
effects and maximising the beneficial influences which its own
activities have on the environment
One of our main aims, and one in
which we are 'trailblazers' on the island, is our use of 'Carbon
Neutral ' heating in the form of a shared woodchip boiler. The
heating system is shared between adjacent properties, by a network
of underground pipes. Diagrams showing how this works
are available in the side bar. Click the images to enlarge.

Recycling
-
We encourage our guests to recycle as
much as the island can re-use or recycle and provide recycle
bins for them to separate out the different types. Also
encourage the use of Castaways charity shop in Craignure and
Bunessan
-
We provide a compost caddy for all
compostable items, like potato peelings, for emptying in our
compost area
- We encourage the use of non bio
cleaning products and provide Ecover washing up liquid,
washing powder, toilet cleaner, hand wash soap, multi
purpose cleaner, all bought locally
http://www.oops-arts.com/ecover
-
Low energy light bulbs are used in the
premises, with timed sensory lighting in the car parking
area. Appropriate reminders are placed in the house
reminding guests to switch off lights when not needed
-
We provide recycled toilet paper and ask
for guests not to use bleach or similar products in the
house as the house has a septic tank
-
Toilets have a half and full flush to
conserve water
-
We provide a clothes airer in the
utility room and an outside washing line for drying
clothes. The tumble drier is provided for emergency
measures in inclement weather!
-
The washing machine has a AAA rating and
is a hot and cold fill, using hot water from the boiler,
rather than heating up to the required temperature by
electricity
-
All other appliances have been sourced
for the correct economy purposes and are newly bought in
2006 for the newly built house
-
We support and advertise local
businesses, buying products for the house such as pottery,
paintings, plants
-
We suggest to guests that they use local
operators to save on their fuel usage whilst on the island,
like land or sea based trips, walking trips or bicycle
